Contractor uses macerator pump for a sub-grade basement bathroom installation without breaking the concrete slab
The Upstate Handyman spares a homeowner-customer a costly excavation for below-floor drainage and overcomes badly misaligned plumbing lines in a tight basement layout with SFA Saniflo’s Saniplus full-bathroom macerating unit.

Problem
GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA — Mike Barber, owner of The Upstate Handyman, LLC, has been involved with the professional trades virtually his entire life. Growing up in a family of engineers and builders, Barber, along with his son Cole, has made it a mission to transform spaces he works in with a clear purpose.
Barber prides himself on guiding clients through every step of their renovation journeys, emphasizing thoughtful planning and clear communication. This painstaking focus on the construction process reflects his experience as a call center senior executive for 15 years.
For a recent construction job, Barber and his son were tasked with installing a new bathroom in a 1,500-square-foot basement. The bathroom had already been framed out and roughed in for this type of future build. The problem: It would have to be built beneath a stairwell.
“The only thing in the right place was the toilet drain, but the rest of the plumbing piping was mislocated,” explains Barber, “So, instead of doing an invasive renovation and breaking up the concrete slab and repiping the bath fixtures, we decided to find a budget-friendly, effective, and reliable solution as an option.”
Solution
Fortunately for his client, Barber already had a reliable solution in mind. Drawing from experience, he installed an SFA Saniflo Saniplus full-bathroom macerating system in the basement bath, having successfully used the product in five basement renovation projects.
According to Barber, the first of these projects happened to be built out below grade. “ So I knew we needed a macerating, above-floor, up-flush system. I did some research online for trusted systems and came across Saniflo. It was the first solution I tried, and I haven’t looked back since.”
Barber’s familiarity with the Saniplus system made the installation process straightforward. Confident in the product and process, he integrated the unit seamlessly into the new bathroom setup. The macerating pump was connected to the toilet, sink, and shower, providing a fully functional bathroom despite the basement’s sub-grade elevation.
In addition, Barber extended the system’s utility by connecting the macerator to a wet bar just around the corner from the bathroom. The Saniplus system is designed to handle drainage from three fixtures. In this instance, the Barbers tied the shower and the wet bar into the same gray water line running into the Saniplus, consolidating drainage and further simplifying the layout.
From there, the plumbing configuration was carefully designed to align with the existing infrastructure underneath the basement stairs. The central drain line rose 10 feet vertically before traversing another 20 feet horizontally to connect with the existing sewer line.
This design ensured efficient waste removal and compliance with plumbing codes while avoiding the need for extensive excavation or costly alterations.
Product Profile: Saniplus
The Saniplus is a 1/2 HP macerating pump system that makes it easy to install a full bathroom up to 15 feet below the sewer line and/or 150 feet away from a soil stack.
Designed mainly for residential use, it grinds toilet waste and toilet paper into a fine slurry, using durable stainless steel blades, and efficiently pumps it away. The Saniplus also handles gray water from sinks, showers, bathtubs, and urinals.
The sealed motor and minimal moving parts ensure long-lasting, low-maintenance performance. With built-in noise-reducing features, flexible inlets, and certification to US and Canadian standards, the Saniplus is a reliable and quiet solution for hard-to-reach bathroom installations.
Other key features:
Two, low-positioned inlets for easy connection to sink, tub, or shower.
Stainless steel macerator blades run at 3600 RPM
Rotating discharge elbow with built-in non-return valve
Quiet operation with vibration absorbers (reduces noise by 10dB)
Certified by CSA and IAPMO listed for nationwide compliance
Limited four-year warranty.
Results
The homeowners’ feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Since the renovation was completed, the basement bathroom has become an integral part of their daily routine.
Thanks to Barber’s careful, insightful approach, the Saniplus unit remains discreet both in presence and performance. Barber effectively minimized any audible operation by positioning the unit behind a wall and adding insulation, allowing the system to function quietly in the background. This attention to detail enhanced user comfort and helped maintain the clean, finished look of the space.
“The owners are pleased with the unit being tucked behind the wall and insulated for sound-reduction purposes,” Barber notes. “They barely even notice it’s there.”
Guests are often surprised to learn that an up-flush macerator system powers the basement bathroom. “Most comment that they wouldn’t have even known it was an above-floor system unless they were told,” Barber adds.
In short, the homeowners appreciate the installation’s aesthetic and functional outcomes. The Barbers turned what could have been a complex plumbing challenge into an elegant, unobtrusive solution.
