Problem

BURIEN, WASHINGTON — Bart Muller, a homeowner in the Seattle suburb of Burien, Washington, shares his home with seven family members. With a large household, having multiple rooms, bathrooms, and common areas is essential for maintaining daily comfort and efficiency. After many years of heavy usage, Muller needed to upgrade the macerating toilet system in the basement laundry room to meet the demands of his household.

A macerator pump is ideal for below-grade spaces, such as basements, where traditional gravity drainage isn’t practical or cost-effective. Instead of routing wastewater through below-floor pipes, the system collects and macerates solids and fluids into a fine slurry, which is then pumped vertically through small-diameter piping into a home’s main sewage line or septic tank.

After many years of reliable performance, Muller’s macerator pump needed to be replaced to ensure continued dependability in meeting the household’s demands. Recognizing the importance of keeping the additional bathroom fully operational, he began exploring options to replace his macerator.

Solution

Muller reached out to SFA Saniflo’s technical team in Edison, NJ, for expert guidance. The team provided helpful support and confirmed that upgrading to the latest Saniplus generation would be the most effective solution for his household’s needs.

Because his existing piping and rear-discharge toilet were already compatible, Muller was able to transition to the new system easily without major plumbing modifications.

“It made the installation process very straightforward,” Muller says. “I was able to reuse my existing plumbing setup without making major changes.”

Muller appreciated the clarity of the instructions and the relatively simple setup for the new Saniplus, because he was able to complete the installation without professional assistance.

“I’ve had no plumbing experience before, but it was simple,” he explains. “I would say it took me about an hour to install it.

According to Muller, the Saniplus in his basement laundry room is set up so that the wastewater is pumped up three feet via the discharge line, which then runs one foot horizontally to the existing household sewer line. The latter, through gravity flow, empties into the municipal sewer.

With the installation completed, Muller was able to restore full functionality to the basement bathroom while improving overall reliability for years to come.

Product Profile: Saniplus

The Saniplus is a ½-horsepower macerating pump system that makes it easy to create a full bathroom where no below-floor drainage exists up to 15 feet below the sewer line or 150 feet away from a soil stack. Designed for residential use, it grinds toilet waste and toilet paper into a fine slurry using durable stainless steel blades and efficiently pumps it away. Positioned behind the toilet, either in front of or behind the wall, it also handles gray water from two other plumbing fixtures: sinks, showers, bathtubs, and urinals.

The sealed motor and minimal moving parts ensure long-lasting, low-maintenance performance. With built-in noise-reducing features, flexible inlets, and certification to U.S. and Canadian standards, the Saniplus is a reliable and quiet solution for hard-to-reach bathroom installations.

Other key features:

Low inlets for easy installation.

Stainless steel macerator blades run at 3,600 RPM.

Rotating discharge elbow with built-in non-return valve.

Quiet operation with vibration absorbers (reduces noise by 10dB).

Certified to CSA, IAPMO (UPC), ASME, and CSA B45.9 compliant

Limited four-year warranty

Results

Since installation, the upgraded Saniplus system has proven to be a dependable and efficient solution for the Muller household. The half-horsepower macerator pump efficiently handles waste and gray water from the laundry room toilet. It is designed to support up to two additional fixtures, which is ideal for high-usage environments, such as Muller’s case.

The Saniplus’s ability to pump wastewater up to 15 feet vertically and 150 feet horizontally makes it especially suitable for below-grade installations such as the Mullers’ basement. The updated model operates quietly and seamlessly integrates with the home’s existing plumbing, providing consistent performance with minimal maintenance.

“The new Saniplus has been working perfectly,” Muller says. “It’s quiet, efficient, and gives me peace of mind knowing it can handle our family’s everyday needs.”

Muller praised the clear installation instructions and support from Saniflo’s technical team, noting that the experience has given him confidence to tackle similar home improvement projects in the future.
